Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 181 GROSVOLD, Karsten Wilfred WWII Karsten was born on June 26, 1923, in Saggrenda, Norway. He joined the army in July 1943 with his younger brother Hoken. However, as they were originally from Norway and became Canadian citizens, they were interrogated by the Army because of one of their older brothers. Around the same time that they joined, their oldest brother Tolly and his wife Margaret hid out in the woods because he did not want to fight overseas. He trained at Camp Aldershot, Nova Scotia and Woodstock, Ontario, taking basic and mechanical courses. He served in Canada with the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. While in Trenton, Ontario and working as a mechanic, he was training on a truck and something fell on his leg. They were going to amputate it, but Karsten convinced the doctors not to. As a result, Karsten was unable to go overseas with Hoken. He remained in Canada, serving until his discharge in July 1945. For his service, he received the Defence Medal and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Elena June Janosko in Pictou, Nova Scotia.
