Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 21 Remembering Henry I close my eyes, and I hear the gunshots I see him fall to the ground, I touch his cold body; it’s as cold as ice. I taste blood spattering from his head. I smell sulphur from the gunpowder. I know he is gone for good. I wake in a cold sweat. I look over to my nightstand and I see my brother’s recruitment photo from the war. I can’t shake the night terrors. I miss him terribly. Today I will visit his grave. We keep safe by distancing, handwashing and masking. Staying the “Blazes Home” like our Premiere is asking. Nothing compares to World Wars 1 and 2. But through sacrifices we’ve learned what to do. Our Canadian Forces fought with bravery and heart. They showed that Canadians all have a part. Veterans stood up for freedom and paid a high cost. Poppies blew across fields where young and old lives were lost. We are sick of Covid and not being able to connect! But now it’s our turn to serve and protect. Our soldiers, responders, our nans and pops. We listen to doctors and nurses to make Covid stop. 2020 is our time to return the debt. Protecting our seniors. Lest we forget! 2nd Place Junior Poetry, Cooper Freeman, Submitted by Mahone Bay Br. 49, District E continued ...
