Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 185 SHANKS, Burton Harry WWII Burton was born in August 1923. He joined the Canadian Army in 1939. He was stationed at Halifax with the Halifax Rifles. He transferred to the Cape Breton Highlanders and was immediately shipped overseas. He served in France and Italy during the liberation. Burton was wounded in Italy during the last days of the war and was sent home to Camp Hill Hospital in Halifax in 1945. He was a member of the Wolfville Legion until his death in 1985. Submitted by Lumsden Branch #074, The Royal Canadian Legion SUTHERLAND, Cabel Everett WWII Everett was born on October 24, 1913, in Guysborough Interville, NS. He enlisted in the Pictou Highlanders in 1939. He transferred to the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, being a Medical Sergeant. He arrived in the United Kingdom in July 1941. He returned to Canada in 1942 to take an Officer’s Training Course in Brockville, ON. He received his Commission (Lieutenant) in January 1943. He went back to the United Kingdom as an instructor in August 1943. During the Invasion of Normandy, Lt. Sutherland was wounded in fighting for Caen, was invalided to England, but on August 24, 1944, returned to France. He was killed in the Battle of Boulogne on September 17, 1944, at the age of thirty. He is buried at Calais CanadianWar Cemetery in St. Englevert, France: Lot 2-C-2. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He joined the Pictou Highlanders in September 1939 in Stellarton. He served at Mulgrave, NS, Dartmouth, NS, and Valcartier, PQ. His theatres of war included Canada, United Kingdom and Italy. He arrived in the United Kingdom on December 1, 1943 and disembarked in Italy on February 18, 1944. Warren was killed on August 31, 1944 at the age of 23. He is buried at MontecchioWar Cemetery in Italy: Lot II-J-S. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, Italy Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, and the War Medal 1939-1945.
