Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 189 CLARKE, Joseph Kinsman “Joe” WWII Joe was born in Grafton, Kings County, NS on November 6, 1913. On August 14, 1941, he married Marion Sanford of Weston, Kings County, NS. He served in the Canadian Army from 1942 to 1946, spending seventeen months overseas. He hated being away from his family. His first child, a daughter, Joanne, was born on February 17, 1943 and a son, Donald, was born on November 22, 1944 while he was overseas. He did not get to see his son until he was over one year old. Following the war, they bought a house on Union Street in Berwick and he worked as a fruits and vegetables inspector for the Federal Department of Agriculture. A third child, Susan, was born in 1951 and the family lived on Union Street until his passing in 1970. Joe was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Ortona Branch 69 for twenty years. Submitted by Family CLAYTON-SMITHSON, Carol Anne PEACETIME Carol was born in Mount Denson, NS. She enrolled in the Navy in 1975 as a Cadet Instructor Cadre Officer, a subcomponent of the Canadian Forces Reserves. Carol completed her basic training at Canadian Training Centre (CTC), Greenwood, NS. Training included basic officer skills, military writing, dress, drill, and military laws and regulations. Carol was attached to Regional Support Unit Atlantic headquartered at Canadian Forces Base Halifax, 12Wing Shearwater, NS but worked with cadets locally. She held Officer positions in Administration and Supply and also two terms as Commanding Officer. On June 4, 2019, Carol retired as Lieutenant (N) completing 43 years. She received the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD3), as well as the Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals. Carol has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 34 years currently at Hants Co. Branch 9. She served as Service Officer and as Executive At Large, working on various committees. In 1994, she enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces. She completed Basic Officer Qualification, Military Occupational Code (Sea), Lieutenant and Captains Qualification and a Senior Officer Training Course with 76 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Minas. She served as a Non-Public Funds Accounting Officer, Training Officer for HMCS Acadia Cadet Summer Training Centre, Area Cadet Cadre Office, Instructor at the Regional Cadet Instructor School (Atlantic) and Commanding Officer of 76 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps (RCSCC) Minas. Marina was awarded the Canadian Forces Decoration (CD1) in recognition of 22 years of service. She continues to serve as an Area Elemental Advisor (AEA) with the Regional Cadet Support unit (Atlantic) RCSU(A). Marina had been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion for 32 years currently at Hants Co. Branch 9. She served as Branch Secretary/Treasurer, Branch Training Officer and as an Executive At Large contributing to Finance, Personnel, Entertainment, and Catering committees. She resides in Windsor, NS.
