Nova Scotia/Nunavut Command of The Royal Canadian Legion www.ns.legion.ca 203 PASCOE, Philip Jocelyn WWII Philip was born in Enniskillen, Ireland, on August 9, 1911. He enlisted on October 20, 1941 in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Moncton, NB. He trained as a pilot and on September 25, 1942 received his Pilot’s Flying Badge and commission at RCAF Station No. 5 Service Flying Training School, Brantford, Ontario. On November 9, 1942, he went overseas to the UK serving with 100 (RAF) Squadron flying Lancaster bombers. On June 28/29, 1943, Philip and his crew were detailed for a raid to Cologne, Germany in an attack that would include 608 aircraft. His Lancaster was 111 ED 362 took off at 23:58 from Grimsby and at 2:47 was shot down by a night-fighter over Holland. Flying Officer Philip Pascoe was killed in action on Tuesday June 29, 1943, at the age of 31, due to a crash at the Voorweg in Rijsoord, southwest of Rotterdam. Philip is buried at Commonwealth War Graves General Cemetery (Crooswijk), Rotterdam, Netherlands. On May 21, 1947, Philip was posthumously awarded RCAF Operational Wings in recognition of gallant service in action against the enemy. Other awards include: 19391945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and clasp. Submitted by Hants Co. Branch #009, The Royal Canadian Legion SAWLER, Joel Gary SPECIAL DUTYAREA Joel was born in Lunenburg, NS in 1973. He started his military career in Bridgewater by joining 143 Airfield Engineer Flight. His trade was Plumbing and Heating Technician. He spent five years with the reserves and put his transfer into the Regular Service in 1999. He was then posted to CFB Cold Lake. His postings included CFB Cold Lake, Alberta; CFB Petawawa, Ontario; CFB Moncton, NB; CFB Kingston, Ontario; and CFB Gagetown, NB. The overseas tours Joel has been on are Operation Stable Haiti in 1997 where he spent 4.5 months on a United Nations Tour; Canadian Forces Station Alert on a six-month deployment in 1999; OPERATION DANACA Golan Heights on a six month deployment in 2003; Afghanistan on a 6.5-month tour in 2006-2007; Afghanistan on a sevenmonth NATO tour in 2010; Kuwait on a two-month TAV in 2012 and Operation Reassurance on a two-month TAV in 2017. He received the CD1 and Clasp, Special Service Medal, Special Service Medal NATO, GCS Southwest Asia plus 2RB, GCS Southwest Asia plus 1RB, Canadian Forces Decoration, GCS Southwest Asia, UN Disengagement Observer Force and CPSM. Overall, Joel really enjoyed his job and time in the military and now is really enjoying retirement. He has 26 years in the service and made a lot of friends over the years. He is very enthusiastic about helping his Legion veteran friends for the years to come. Joel is a four-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Chester Branch 44. Submitted Independently
